How We Went From Earning a Living to Building Wealth, Together

Today’s post is inviting you to check out my recently published article over at The Huffington Post. I wrote about our journey away from money being a source of stress to what it is now: a tool we utilize to build our confidence, our future, and of course, in building wealth, together.

We actually spent a bit of extra time on this article knowing that it would open us up to a bigger audience.

We’re very happy to see our readership grow.

I’m also excited that my blog is now in the top 200 personal finance blogs according to

Apparently, I’m doing something right over here! So, thank you to everyone who stops by to read a few sentences, or reads the entire post & leaves comments.

I started writing this site to share ideas, learn, and grow within a supportive community. I didn’t start this site with the intention of making some quick cash.

I’m happy to see so many gains over the course of this year and I look forward to finding more ways to offer value to you as readers.

My triathlon race is this weekend, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed for clear skies. There are rumors of scattered thunderstorms, but like life in general, we shouldn’t let the worst case scenarios consume us to the point of not taking action. I’ve learned a lot this year from my training, and that is definitely one more lesson that can be added to the list.

Here’s the link again for our Huff Post article. Let me know what you think in the comments below or on their site!

Thanks! The blog keeps finding ways to give back to me so I’ll keep finding ways to give back to the blog.

Love it Matt! Good luck this weekend. What distance is the race? Fingers crossed for a cool morning with some clear skies!

    • Distilled Dollar Aug 26, 2016, 5:49 am

I’m doing a sprint, but Chicago’s sprint is a little different, with a slightly longer bike route of 15 miles instead of the ~12.5 you’d see in other sprints. Of course, I learned their course is 10% longer only last year, so I spent years tackling, “why am I so slow on the bike portion!”

For anyone unfamiliar, my race will be 0.5mile/750m swim, 15mile/25k bike, 3.1mile/5k run.

Thanks! I’m looking forward to building on this as the months go by. I’m real happy to have come this far in less than a year, and I’m always beyond thrilled when I receive personal emails/messages about how this or that helped someone out.

Congrats! I hope a lot more people get to hear your story and decide to take action.

    • Distilled Dollar Aug 29, 2016, 1:03 pm

Thank you Ms. Montana – I keep thinking what can I write about that will provide the most value to my readers – so I’m happy the message is resonating with readers. I also keep thinking, “what would I have wanted to see or hear when I first started learning about personal finance.”

Nice article you have out there.

My favourite part: “We also learned that “afford” is a very dangerous word when it comes to eliminating debt and building wealth.”

    • Distilled Dollar Aug 29, 2016, 12:34 pm

Thanks! “Afford” is scary in a let-us-give-you-credit-to-buy-that-today environment.

Wow congrats on being published on Huffington Post, that’s a great accomplishment! I’ve really enjoyed watching your blog grow these past few months. Good luck with your triathlon this weekend!

  • Karlene Aug 26, 2016, 11:29 am

Matt, congratulations to you and your lady on all of your accomplishments.

The two parts that resonate with me the most:
    1) If we spend two thousand hours a year earning a paycheck, we can easily spend a few hours each month learning how to keep it.
Totally agree, that’s part of the reason why I recommitted myself to continuing my blog. I am learning a lot, so why not share it?
    2) … we will celebrate hitting a net worth of zero later this year.
Although my husband and I are far from this goal it is a good one to have along with all the other goals.

All the best with your triathalon this weekend.

    • Distilled Dollar Aug 29, 2016, 1:07 pm

      1) Yes! Sharing is especially useful since many people quickly learn that a lot of people are working together to figure it all out.
      2) We can’t wait! We’ve been looking forward to it for a few years now and we’re only a few months away now (barring a crazy stock fluctuation).

  • The Financial Panther Aug 26, 2016, 8:04 pm

Congrats on the Huff Post article Matt! That’s really awesome! Really like the way you think about your finances too. Especially the car free philosophy and your automating and systematizing of your finances.

    • Distilled Dollar Aug 29, 2016, 1:09 pm

      Thanks for the comment!

Car free has been a great advantage to offset the “disadvantage” of living in a large city. Overall, I couldn’t be happier with our current lifestyle, especially with how fast we’re moving in the right direction.

Automation is usually the first thing I bring up when friends or family ask me for advice. Once we automate, we can create more space to learn more about personal finance, instead of shift through bills, coordinate payments, and deposit cash for investments.

Well done mate. As one who has followed your blog from almost the start, it’s great to see it become more and more successful. An inspiration to the rest of us.

One question though. Will you still talk to us when you’re rich and famous? 😉

    • Distilled Dollar Aug 29, 2016, 1:11 pm

Haha! You have been on the site a long time Martin! Perhaps that is the reason for the growth over the year. 🙂

  • Finance Solver Aug 27, 2016, 3:47 pm
